About the UK Dairy Carbon Network

The UK Dairy Carbon Network is working with over 50 dairy farms across the UK to put practical, farm-ready solutions for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions into action.  Led by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) and funded by DEFRA, the project is driven by a UK-wide consortium of leading research institutions and industry organisations.

We’re focused on six key areas with proven potential to reduce emissions. By demonstrating approaches that deliver results on real farms, we aim to show how GHG reductions can go hand-in-hand with improvements in efficiency and productivity.

Each participating farm receives personalised support, including a tailored implementation plan that suits their system, local climate and geography. We’ll create opportunities for shared learning through events such as farm walks, open days and peer-to-peer exchanges – giving farmers a chance to learn directly from one another.

Our goal is to share the results widely and accelerate the adoption of GHG-reducing practices that benefit both the environment and the long-term sustainability of UK dairy farming.

Project partners

The UK Dairy Carbon Network is led by the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI) in Northern Ireland and delivered through a UK-wide consortium of trusted partners. The project brings together the UK’s farmer levy organisations AHDB and AgriSearch alongside eight leading dairy research institutions.

These research partners bring internationally recognised expertise in greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement and mitigation, as well as in improving nitrogen use efficiency and phosphorus utilisation in UK dairy systems. Crucially, they also have proven experience in delivering large-scale, on-farm research across diverse farming systems and geographies.
