Biological Nitrogen Fixation (Legumes)
Aim: Use of clover to fix nitrogen from the atmosphere and reduce the use of manufactured N fertiliser.
Action on farm:
Incorporate Legumes (Red Clover, White Clover, Lucerne, Multi-species sward) on farm for grazing or the production of silage:
Create a re-seeding plan detailing target area, timescale, method etc.
Determine appropriate manufactured fertiliser application rate (agronomist provided)
Establish crop and manage appropriately using best practice guidelines provided
Urease Inhibitors/Use of Protected Urea
Aim:
To reduce indirect nitrous oxide emissions and reduce N fertiliser usage.
Action on farm:
Replacement of standard urea fertiliser with protected urea fertiliser.
Reduce total manufactured N applied accordingly – up to 12% reduction achievable with same effective N application (agronomist provided)
